History

UTA Arad was founded on April 18, 1945, by Baron Francisc von Neuman, a prominent industrialist and owner of the Arad Textile Company, as well as other local factories, including a distillery and yeast plant. Inspired by Arsenal FC of London, Neuman chose red and white as the club’s colors and modeled the original stadium after Arsenal’s Highbury. The team, initially named ITA Arad (Întreprinderea Textilă Arad), played its first match on May 27, 1945, against Banatul Sânnicolau Mic, resulting in a 2–3 loss. The Francisc von Neuman Stadium was inaugurated on September 1, 1946, with a 1–0 victory over Ciocanul București.

UTA quickly raised to prominence, winning its first Liga I title in the 1946–47 season, its debut in the top flight. The club went on to secure six national championships (1946–47, 1947–48, 1950, 1954, 1968–69, 1969–70) and two Cupa României titles (1947–48, 1953), making it one of the most successful Romanian clubs of the 20th century outside Bucharest. UTA shares the record for the most Liga I titles won by a non-Bucharest club with Chinezul Timișoara, earning the nickname Campioana Provinciei (“Provincial Champion”). This record held until CFR Cluj surpassed it in the 2020–21 season.

In European competitions, UTA achieved notable success, including eliminating defending champions Feyenoord in the 1970–71 European Cup (1–1 away, 0–0 at home) and reaching the UEFA Cup quarterfinals in 1971–72, where they were knocked out by Tottenham Hotspur (3–1 on aggregate). However, the club faced a decline starting in the late 1970s, with relegation to Divizia B in 1979. Despite occasional returns to the top flight, financial and managerial challenges led to the club’s dissolution in 2014. A new team, UTA Bătrâna Doamnă, was founded in 2013 by former player Marius Țucudean and supported by fans, eventually reclaiming the UTA name and legacy in 2014. The club has since returned to Liga I, competing consistently in recent seasons.

Stadium

UTA plays its home matches at the modern Francisc von Neuman Stadium, opened in 2020 with a capacity of 12,584. The new stadium replaced the original venue of the same name, which was built in 1946. The first Liga I match at the new stadium was a goalless draw against Voluntari in 2020, played without spectators due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The stadium is a symbol of the club’s heritage and its connection to the Arad community.
